It is not rare to see that structural materials used in the backbone of houses are the main cause of setbacks and dissatisfaction of the dwelling discovered by clients once settled in their new homes. In addition, resistance against earthquake and fire hazards and also the life span of the home can be greatly affected by the structural material used, ultimately affecting the true value of the property and the home.

The importance for high quality structural material is undeniable; however, replacing already installed components, especially structural components, is nearly impossible. Proper planning and inspection of the building products before the construction is the key point in creating a high value home.

We, at Key-Tec Co. LTD., value our customer’s desires for a “Home with Quality” and would like to offer our assistance by introducing our innovative structural LVL KeyLam.

What is Structural Keylam?

Structural LVL KeyLam is a product manufactured by gluing multiple layers of dried veneers (~4mm thick) with grains parallel to each other. The outstanding strength and the dimensional stability achieved from such process have been highly praised and evaluated.

The Properties?

Outstanding Strength

Since “Keylam” is made by laminating veneers with their grains parallel, it promises superior strength when used as axial building components (columns, beams and etc.). When applied as horizontal structural element (beams), pride is taken in its high allowable stress against vertical load (live load, dead load, snow load, etc.).

Kiln-dried Material

As the veneers are dried prior to assembly of the LVL, the moisture content of the product is guaranteed to be below 14%. Such characteristics allow remarkable reduction of problems, namely checks, warps, and looseness of joints, etc. which hold the possibility of being the direct cause of creaky floors and distortion in the wall.

Low Dispersion

Since “Keylam” is made by laminating multiple sheets of veneer, it has a very low dispersion property. Though a defect may appear in a layer of veneer, the surrounding veneer will absorb any possible weakness and the effect will be negligible. Lower dispersion means that the material has higher lower limits when the mean value is the same with materials with higher dispersion, this enables higher allowable stress.

Long-size and Large Area Material Gaining Capability

As the veneers are vertically connected/ glued, it is possible to produce long-size straight lumber, even from thinned small diameter trees. Also, various thicknesses can be achieved by adjusting the number of veneers, meeting any possible purpose and use.

Local Round Logs can be Utilized

As local round log can be utilized for the LVL production, contributions and promotions can be made to the local forestry industries.

Long Span Beams

High strength Keylam are capable of achieving longer span, allowing for less pillars, leading to the capability of creating large open space. When the building is in need of refurnishing, there are very few restrictions to achieving the desired layout due to large open spaces with little to no column. Such ideal conditions are only achieved with the use of the Key-Lam Joists.
